This article takes as its point of departure the Claudian expedition in Britain in 43. After fleshing out the reasons behind Claudius’ decision to return to Britain after Caesar’s campaigns, I point out an example of intertextuality in Seneca’s Apocolocyntosis (12, 3). By alluding to Horace (Carm. III 5), Seneca presents the conquest of Britain as one of the multiple arguments to oppose to Claudius’s deification.
